Rajeev Shukla is set to become the interim president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) following the impending departure of Roger Binny, who will turn 70 on July 19. Binny&rsquo;s exit is in accordance with the BCCI&rsquo;s constitutional rule that bars individuals from continuing as office-bearers once they reach the age of 70.
Binny, who took over from Sourav Ganguly in 2022, was elected unopposed to the position. His upcoming 70th birthday marks the end of his eligibility to remain in office. Shukla, currently the BCCI vice-president, is expected to take over the role in a temporary capacity until the board conducts its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September.
A national daily has confirmed that Shukla, aged 65, will fill the position on an interim basis for a period of three months. During the AGM, he will be eligible to contest for a full term as BCCI president. Shukla, a Member of Parliament and former Indian Premier League chairman, has held various administrative positions within Indian cricket.
Roger Binny, a former Indian cricketer and a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning squad, played 27 Test matches and 72 One Day Internationals (ODIs) for India between 1979 and 1987. He ended his international career with 124 wickets and 1,459 runs.&nbsp;
During the 1983 World Cup, Binny emerged as the tournament&rsquo;s top wicket-taker, claiming 18 wickets. He also previously served on the BCCI&rsquo;s selection panel.
During Binny&rsquo;s tenure as BCCI president, the Indian men&rsquo;s cricket team secured two major ICC titles &mdash; the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in 2025. His leadership also saw the launch of the Women&rsquo;s Premier League (WPL), a significant development in Indian women&rsquo;s cricket.&nbsp;
Additionally, a policy was introduced requiring centrally contracted players to participate in domestic matches when not on national duty. This directive led to players such as Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer reportedly being excluded from the BCCI&rsquo;s annual contract list last year due to non-compliance.
In a related administrative change earlier this year, Devajit Saikia was elected unopposed as the new BCCI secretary, following Jay Shah&rsquo;s appointment as chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
