Gambhir to Meet BCCI Over Test Captaincy Decision
Gautam Gambhir to discuss Test captaincy and seek full control over team decisions in key BCCI meeting.

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir is scheduled to reach Mumbai on Thursday for an important meeting with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), according to media reports. The meeting is expected to determine the captaincy for the forthcoming five-match Test series against England.
The leadership discussion has gained urgency following the recent retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket. Both players stepped away from the format shortly before the selection of the squad for the England tour, creating a leadership vacuum within the team.
A prominent journalist from the national daily shared the news via social media on Wednesday, stating: “#Breaking: Hearing that India head coach @GautamGambhir is likely to be in Mumbai tomorrow for an important meeting to finalise captain for the upcoming five-match Test tour of England @BCCI.”
Multiple sources suggest that Gambhir has sought complete control over team operations, including matters of selection and strategy. His objective is reportedly to dismantle what has been referred to as the long-standing “superstar culture” in the dressing room.
As per a report, Gambhir has asked for full autonomy in cricket-related decisions, particularly in light of India’s recent struggles in Test cricket. These include a series defeat at home against New Zealand and a poor showing during the tour of Australia.
With the absence of senior figures who might oppose his approach, Gambhir is expected to exert significant influence over team direction moving forward.
In terms of captaincy, Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah are understood to be the primary candidates. Bumrah, who was Rohit Sharma’s designated deputy and has previously led the team during the Australia series, remains a strong contender. However, persistent concerns regarding his injury record may shift the preference towards Gill.
Reports indicate that Gambhir is leaning towards naming a younger player as captain—someone who can align closely with his vision for the team’s future. Gill is seen as a suitable option for this role, matching the profile Gambhir is reportedly seeking.
