A Pune court on Saturday turned down an application filed by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi requesting information on the maternal ancestry of Satyaki Savarkar, who is the grand-nephew of Hindutva figure Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The plea was submitted in the context of a defamation case brought against Gandhi over remarks he allegedly made in London concerning the late ideologue.
The order was issued by Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Amol Shinde, who ruled that the application lacked relevance to the matter at hand. In his order, the magistrate stated, &ldquo;The case is not related to or disputed on the family tree of late Himani Ashok Savarkar. Therefore, this court does not find any merit in the application of the accused. There is also no need to send the matter for further investigation.&rdquo;
Gandhi, represented by advocate Milind Pawar, had argued that while Satyaki Savarkar had included information about his paternal heritage in his complaint, there was no mention of his maternal background. The defence contended that this omission was significant and that the missing details were necessary for the legal proceedings.
Satyaki Savarkar is the son of Himani Savarkar, who was the daughter of Gopal Vinayak Godse. Gopal was the younger brother of Nathuram Godse, the man who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi.
Alongside the dismissal of Gandhi&rsquo;s request, the court also refused a separate application by Satyaki Savarkar which sought to revoke Rahul Gandhi&rsquo;s bail. The complainant alleged that Gandhi had been intentionally delaying proceedings. According to the plea, the matter had been scheduled for the recording of Gandhi&rsquo;s plea since January 10, 2025, but the accused had avoided doing so under various pretexts.
The court, however, found the reasons provided insufficient to justify the cancellation of bail.
