The deployment of 2,000 National Guard personnel to Los Angeles was ordered late Saturday night by President Donald Trump following widespread violence during ongoing immigration-related protests across the city.

The situation on the ground deteriorated sharply over the past 72 hours as confrontations between demonstrators and federal enforcement officers intensified, resulting in over 100 arrests, according to law enforcement sources.
Federal agents, primarily tasked with executing immigration detentions and deportations, were targeted by what officials described as "violent mobs" near key locations in East and South Los Angeles. Eyewitness videos circulating on social media showed scenes of chaos, including fires, damaged vehicles, and federal officers under attack.
A formal communication from the White House stated that elements of the California National Guard are being federalised under emergency powers. The move effectively overrides state control, a decision Governor Gavin Newsom publicly condemned in a series of late-night posts on social media platform X.
Newsom accused the administration of "deliberate provocation" and argued that local agencies were already managing the situation effectively. &ldquo;There is no unmet law enforcement need,&rdquo; he wrote.
Despite these assurances, the White House indicated it was prepared to escalate further. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, in an online statement, warned that active-duty U.S. Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton are on high alert and could be deployed if the violence persists.
President Trump, in a characteristically blunt post, criticised both Governor Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, suggesting federal intervention was the only remaining option. "RIOTS &amp; LOOTERS, the way it should be solved!!!" he wrote.
Trump, who was attending a UFC event in New Jersey at the time the deployment order was issued, also circulated a formal presidential memo. The document declared the ongoing unrest as a potential rebellion, authorising the mobilisation of National Guard forces "to suppress acts of violence that hinder lawful governance."
Vice President JD Vance added fuel to the fire, branding the protestors &ldquo;insurrectionists&rdquo; and accusing some of waving foreign flags during demonstrations.
The violence has not been without consequence for civilian figures. David Huerta, president of the SEIU California labour union, sustained minor injuries during a clash with federal agents on Friday. The Department of Homeland Security alleged that Huerta was "obstructing" officers during a protest observation.
Local law enforcement officials remained on high alert Sunday morning, with road closures, increased patrols, and aerial surveillance deployed in hotspots across the city. Officials have appealed for calm but warned of swift action against any further violence.
As the federal-state confrontation intensifies, Los Angeles finds itself at the centre of a high-stakes political and public order crisis, with implications far beyond city limits.
