Israel’s military has confirmed intercepting a rocket launched from the northern Gaza Strip, as hostilities continue to escalate in the region under its expanding military campaign.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that air defense systems successfully intercepted the projectile after it crossed into Israeli territory. Air raid sirens were activated in the Lakhish area of southern Israel. No casualties or damage were reported.
The incident comes shortly after two rockets were fired from central Gaza on Sunday. One was intercepted, while the other landed in an uninhabited area.
Following Wednesday’s launch, IDF spokesperson Lt. Colonel Avichay Adraee issued a warning to residents of northern Gaza, urging them to move south for their safety. “The IDF will respond forcefully to rocket fire. Terror groups—especially Hamas—are responsible for the suffering of civilians. For your safety, head south,” he said.
While no group initially took responsibility for the latest launch, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad later claimed the attack, stating it had fired a barrage of rockets at Ashdod and Ashkelon in retaliation for what it described as Israeli aggression against Palestinians.
The Ashkelon Municipality confirmed the rocket interception and reported no unusual activity or damage in the area.
This renewed exchange of fire follows the launch of Israel’s latest offensive, Operation Gideon’s Chariots. Health authorities in Gaza report that more than 53,655 people have been killed since the broader Israeli military campaign began over 19 months ago.
