In a political drama that unfolded at breakneck speed, the once-powerful alliance between U.S. President Donald Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk has devolved into an all-out public feud. What began as a seemingly respectful departure by Musk from his advisory role in the Trump administration quickly spiraled into a war of words, policy clashes, and personal accusations. Within days, the cracks widened into a full-blown split &mdash; complete with legislative jabs, impeachment calls, and financial fallout.
The clash reached a peak on Thursday, 5 June, when Trump accused Musk of attempting to derail a key legislative bill, reportedly due to its removal of electric vehicle tax credits&mdash;an alleged hit to Tesla&rsquo;s profits. Speaking to reporters, Trump said, &ldquo;Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will any more. I'm very disappointed in Elon. He knew every aspect of this bill&mdash;he knew it better than almost anybody&mdash;and he never had a problem until right after he left.&rdquo;
Escalating the situation, Musk even floated the idea of forming a new political party for &ldquo;the 80% in the middle,&rdquo; posting a poll on his social media platform, Truth Social, to gauge public interest.
Musk retaliated swiftly, throwing his support behind calls for Trump&rsquo;s impeachment and backing Senator JD Vance as a potential replacement. He warned that Trump&rsquo;s proposed global tariffs would trigger a recession in the latter half of 2025. On 6 June, Musk wrote on X (formerly Twitter), &ldquo;This bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!&rdquo;
The feud then turned personal. Later the same day, Musk accused Trump of being linked to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. &ldquo;Trump&rsquo;s name is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public,&rdquo; Musk claimed.
He further posted an old quote attributed to Trump about Epstein: &ldquo;He&rsquo;s a lot of fun to be with&hellip; and many of [the women] are on the younger side.&rdquo; Musk ended the message with a pointed jibe: &ldquo;Have a nice day, DJT!&rdquo;
Trump responded with fury, threatening to revoke all federal contracts and subsidies granted to Musk&rsquo;s companies. &ldquo;The easiest way to save money in our Budget&hellip; is to terminate Elon&rsquo;s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts,&rdquo; he posted.
The economic consequences were immediate and severe. Tesla&rsquo;s stock plunged by over 14% on Thursday, wiping out roughly $152 billion in market value. According to Bloomberg&rsquo;s Billionaires Index, Musk personally lost around $8.73 billion.
Returning to Truth Social, Trump defended the contested bill as &ldquo;one of the Greatest Bills ever presented to Congress,&rdquo; warning that failing to pass it would have resulted in a &ldquo;68% Tax Increase.&rdquo; He also took a direct swipe at Musk, saying: &ldquo;Elon was &lsquo;wearing thin,&rsquo; I asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate&hellip; and he just went CRAZY.&rdquo;
