US President Donald Trump has sparked widespread backlash after wearing a blue suit and matching tie to Pope Francis&rsquo;s funeral at St Peter&rsquo;s Basilica, defying the Vatican's strict dress code, which required men to wear dark suits, white shirts, and black ties.
In contrast, First Lady Melania Trump adhered to tradition, wearing a black coat, gloves, pumps, and a long lace veil. Interestingly, it was First Lady&rsquo;s birthday and she chose to attend the Pope&rsquo;s funeral with Trump.&nbsp;
Other leaders, including UK PM Sir Keir Starmer and his wife, complied with the black dress code, while Ukraine&rsquo;s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy opted for his signature black combat attire, symbolic of his country&rsquo;s ongoing war. He had worn military attire since the beginning of the war with Russia in 2022.&nbsp;
Seated prominently in the front row among world dignitaries, Trump&rsquo;s bright blue suit and American flag lapel pin stood out, drawing sharp criticism online.
Social media erupted, with users calling him &ldquo;tone-deaf,&rdquo; &ldquo;disrespectful,&rdquo; and accusing him of making the event about himself.
Others lauded him for wearing an attire that symbolized authority and leadership, befitting of the leader of America. 
Adding to the controversy, Trump was also spotted texting and sleeping during the funeral proceedings. However, some netizens praised him for &ldquo;standing out&rdquo; by wearing blue, seeing it as a bold personal statement.
Notably, before the ceremony, Trump and Zelensky had a brief, &ldquo;productive&rdquo; discussion inside St Peter&rsquo;s Basilica &mdash; their first face-to-face since a tense meeting months earlier.
Leading the mass, Cardinal Giovanni Battista subtly reminded attendees of Pope Francis&rsquo;s message: &ldquo;Build bridges, not walls&rdquo; &mdash; seen by many as a pointed reference to Trump&rsquo;s legacy.
Despite criticism, Trump wasn&rsquo;t the only leader who deviated from the dress code: Former US President Joe Biden and the United Kingdom&rsquo;s Prince William also wore dark blue suits but faced less scrutiny.
