China&rsquo;s Ministry of Finance has announced that it will raise tariffs on all goods imported from the United States to 84%, effective Thursday, April 10 at 12.01 am CST. This marks a sharp escalation from the 34% previously declared.
The move comes in direct response to US President Donald Trump&rsquo;s decision to impose 104% tariffs on Chinese goods, which took effect early Wednesday.
In a statement, the Chinese finance ministry said the latest measures were necessary in light of what it called the United States&rsquo; &ldquo;arrogant and bullying behaviour&rdquo;.
The escalating tariff war has already rattled global markets. On Wednesday, London&rsquo;s FTSE 100 opened over 2% lower, while Japan&rsquo;s Nikkei 225 fell more than 4%, and Taiwan&rsquo;s TAIEX dropped nearly 6% in early trade.
Analysts are warning that the tit-for-tat duties could mark the most severe disruption to international trade since the 1930s.
