Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a two-day tour of Gujarat on Monday, launching and initiating development projects valued at over Rs 82,950 crore across the state.&nbsp;
His visit began with a roadshow in Vadodara, set against the backdrop of Operation Sindoor, the recent military operation by Indian Armed Forces targeting nine terror camps in Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in 26 deaths, the majority being tourists.
On the first day, Modi inaugurated a locomotive manufacturing facility in Dahod and flagged off an electric locomotive produced at the plant. The factory will manufacture 9,000 HP electric engines designed for both domestic deployment and international export. These locomotives are equipped with regenerative braking technology aimed at conserving energy.
In Dahod, the Prime Minister launched and laid the foundation for infrastructure projects estimated at Rs 24,000 crore. These included key railway developments and several initiatives spearheaded by the Government of Gujarat. As part of the railway expansion, he flagged off the Vande Bharat Express connecting Veraval and Ahmedabad, and an express service between Valsad and Dahod. Modi also inaugurated the upgraded Katosan&ndash;Kalol railway section and flagged off a freight train from the converted line.
The Prime Minister travelled to Bhuj where he unveiled multiple projects amounting to more than Rs 53,400 crore. Among the major undertakings are transmission systems aimed at transporting renewable energy from the Khavda Renewable Energy Park, the expansion of Gujarat&rsquo;s power transmission grid, and the commissioning of an ultra-supercritical thermal power unit at Tapi. He addressed public meetings in both Dahod and Bhuj during the day.
Modi&rsquo;s itinerary continues on May 27 with a programme at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, where he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for various projects totalling Rs 5,536 crore across multiple departments. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel is scheduled to attend the event.
Under the Urban Development Department, the Prime Minister will formally open more than 22,000 houses constructed at a cost of Rs 1,006 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). He will also inaugurate Surat&rsquo;s Biodiversity Park, a Rs 145 crore project developed on reclaimed land along the Kankra-Khadi riverfront.
Urban development initiatives worth Rs 1,447 crore across Jamnagar, Surat, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Junagadh will be opened, while foundation stones will be laid for additional projects valued at Rs 1,347 crore. These include the Phase-3 expansion of Ahmedabad&rsquo;s Sabarmati Riverfront, budgeted at Rs 1,000 crore.
Within the Roads and Buildings (R&amp;B) and Water Resources Departments, projects exceeding Rs 2,000 crore will be launched. This includes R&amp;B schemes valued at Rs 170 crore, and water pipeline projects totalling over Rs 1,860 crore. Among these are the Rs 888 crore Tharad-Dhanera pipeline in Banaskantha and the Rs 678 crore Deodar-Lakhani pipeline.
Modi is also set to inaugurate the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre in Gandhinagar, built for Rs 84 crore. Additionally, he will lay the foundation stone for a new 1,800-bed inpatient department block in Ahmedabad, featuring a dedicated 500-bed section for infectious diseases, at an estimated cost of Rs 588 crore.
During the visit, the Prime Minister will also distribute funds under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana, including Rs 2,731 crore to 17 municipal corporations and Rs 569 crore to 149 municipalities.
On May 27 at approximately 11 am, Modi will attend a ceremonial event in Gandhinagar to commemorate 20 years since the inception of Gujarat&rsquo;s Urban Development Year 2005 initiative, which he introduced as Chief Minister to advance urban infrastructure, governance, and quality of life.&nbsp;
He will officially launch Urban Development Year 2025 and unveil Gujarat&rsquo;s updated Urban Development Plan along with the State Clean Air Programme. The Prime Minister is also expected to address the gathering on the occasion.
