India, Pakistan Agree to Immediate Full Ceasefire
India and Pakistan halt all military actions after direct talks and US mediation, with further dialogue planned

A sudden and significant shift occurred in the India-Pakistan conflict on Saturday evening, as both nations agreed to a comprehensive ceasefire following direct military communication and a parallel diplomatic push involving the United States.
The ceasefire was confirmed by both countries shortly after 5.25 pm IST, following a statement by US President Donald Trump, who announced that India and Pakistan had reached an agreement to end hostilities immediately across land, air, and sea.
In a social media post made on Truth Social at 8.00 am Washington DC time, President Trump stated, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Confirmation from New Delhi and Islamabad followed within minutes. India’s Ministry of External Affairs and Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry both released statements acknowledging the ceasefire.
The decision, as outlined by Indian officials, was the outcome of a direct conversation between the military leadership of both countries.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri detailed the agreement during a brief press conference on Saturday, stating, “The Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan called the DGMO of India at 15.30 hours (3.30 pm) this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would cease all firing and military action on land, in the air, and at sea with effect from 1700 hours (5 pm).”
He added, “Instructions have been given on both sides to implement this understanding. The Directors General of Military Operations will speak again on May 12.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also weighed in shortly after President Trump’s announcement. In a post on X, Rubio wrote that he had spoken earlier in the day with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir.
He confirmed that both countries had agreed not only to the ceasefire but also to begin discussions on a range of broader issues. “We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace,” he wrote.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, issued a separate statement on X confirming the development. “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!” he stated.
While the United States attributed the breakthrough to its diplomatic efforts, Indian officials underscored that the agreement was reached through direct communication between the two countries’ military officials.
The ceasefire was set in motion rapidly. The initial contact between the two DGMOs occurred at 3.30 pm IST, with the agreement formally taking effect at 5 pm. As per the understanding, the Directors General of Military Operations from both sides are scheduled to speak again on May 12 at 12 pm.
