Panic erupted across Amritsar this morning following a deadly illicit liquor tragedy that has claimed seven lives in Punjab's Majitha region.
The incident unfolded overnight when residents from three villages fell seriously ill after consuming toxic alcohol. By morning, authorities confirmed 14 fatalities, with seven others remaining in critical condition.
Police and administrative teams have arrived at the affected locations. Samples of the consumed alcohol have been collected and sent for laboratory examination. Officials have sealed the liquor shop from where the deadly spirits were reportedly purchased.
Among the deceased are three young men each from Bhangali and Murari Kalan villages, with two additional victims from Thariyal village. Abtab Singh, Station House Officer of Majitha Police Station, confirmed the incident, stating: "We are investigating the deaths reportedly caused by toxic liquor consumption. We are determining the source of the illegal alcohol before proceeding with further action. Medical reports of the deceased have been obtained from the hospital."
The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has taken significant action against the illicit liquor manufacturers in Majitha. Police have arrested the primary suspect, Prabhjeet Singh, identified as the mastermind behind the counterfeit liquor distribution network. The Senior Superintendent of Police, Amritsar Rural, has confirmed the arrest.
A case has been registered under FIR number 42 dated 13/5/25, under Section 105 of the BNS and Section 61A of the Excise Act.
In total, police have apprehended four individuals: the mastermind and three accomplices. The additional arrests include Kulbir Singh, alias Jaggu, brother of the primary accused Prabhjeet; Sahib Singh, alias Saray, a resident of Mardi Kalan village; Gurjant Singh; and Ninder Kaur, wife of Jeeta from Thirewal village.
