Assam: Sarma Drives Panchayat Poll Momentum
CM leads BJP’s rural push, promising devt; slams rivals ahead of Assam panchayat polls

As Assam gears up for its upcoming panchayat elections, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is leading the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) campaign with a strong focus on development and accountability.
The elections are slated to conclude by February 10, 2025, and are seen as a key indicator of rural support for the ruling party.
CM Sarma has been actively campaigning across Lakhimpur district, addressing large gatherings in Leelabari, Ujjwalpur, Azad, and Somdiri Gaon panchayat areas.
At a major rally held near Leelabari airport, he launched sharp criticism against local MLA Utpal Dutta, accusing him of mismanaging ₹40 crore allocated for road construction in Telahi Gaon panchayat. “The money meant for public infrastructure was misused. The people deserve better,” said Sarma, calling on voters to support BJP candidates for clean and effective local governance.
The campaign highlights the BJP’s development agenda, with Sarma reaffirming the party’s commitment to national security, minority welfare, and transparent leadership.
In a significant pre-election reform, the Assam Cabinet has amended the Assam Panchayat Act to introduce Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for the first time in local body elections. The reforms also set minimum educational qualifications for candidates and introduce disqualification measures for violations of child marriage laws. “These changes will strengthen the integrity of our Panchayati system,” said the chief minister.
The State Election Commission (SEC) is currently finalizing schedules and candidate lists, with further details available on its official website: https://sec.assam.gov.in.
With the campaign gaining momentum, political observers are closely watching how the BJP’s grassroots outreach will influence the outcome in this crucial local election.
