Kohli Named in Complaint Over Bengaluru Stadium Stampede That Killed 11
Police are examining a complaint filed against cricketer Virat Kohli. The case concerns the tragic stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The incident left 11 people dead during celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru&rsquo;s Indian Premier League victory.
According to the police, social activist H.M. Venkatesh submitted a formal complaint on Friday, alleging that Kohli, who led the public celebrations, bears moral responsibility for the crowd surge incident on June 4. The complaint has been acknowledged, but no First Information Report (FIR) has been registered as of yet, officials confirmed.
The stampede broke out on Wednesday evening when tens of thousands of fans gathered outside the stadium to celebrate RCB&rsquo;s maiden IPL title win. The situation spiralled out of control as the crowd swelled far beyond the venue&rsquo;s capacity, leading to fatal injuries and chaos on the surrounding streets.
Initial findings indicate that while the stadium's seating capacity is around 35,000, an estimated 2 to 3 lakh people converged in and around the venue. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah acknowledged the mismatch in crowd management, stating the infrastructure could not accommodate the overwhelming turnout.
In response to the incident, the state government has instituted a judicial inquiry under the leadership of retired High Court judge Justice John Michael D'Cunha. The commission is tasked with establishing the sequence of events, examining potential administrative lapses, and recommending accountability.
Meanwhile, police have arrested four individuals linked to the event&rsquo;s planning and execution. Those taken into custody include Nikhil Sosale, Marketing and Revenue Head of Royal Challengers Bengaluru; Sunil Mathew, Vice President of Business Affairs; Kiran Kumar, Senior Event Manager; and Sumanth, who was in charge of ticketing operations at DNA Entertainment Pvt Ltd. All four were produced before the 14th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court and have been remanded to 14-day judicial custody.
Investigations are ongoing. Police officials have not ruled out further arrests as they continue to piece together how the celebratory event turned deadly.
