<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">The Central Bureau of Investigation has seized assets worth approximately Rs 4.5 crore during extensive raids on properties linked to a senior Indian Revenue Service officer arrested in a major bribery case.</p>
<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">Amit Kumar Singal, a 2007-batch IRS officer serving as additional director general at the Directorate of Taxpayer Services in Delhi, was taken into custody alongside an associate following allegations of demanding Rs 45 lakh in illegal gratification from a pizza chain proprietor.</p>
<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">The raids, conducted across Delhi, Mumbai and Punjab, yielded substantial evidence of the accused's alleged corruption. Investigators recovered 3.5 kilograms of gold, 2 kilograms of silver valued at approximately Rs 3.5 crore, and cash amounting to Rs 1 crore.</p>
<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">According to the Central Bureau of Investigation, the operation also uncovered documentation relating to a safety deposit box and 25 bank accounts across various financial institutions, along with papers pertaining to immovable properties and assets spread across the three states.</p>
<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">"The Central Bureau of Investigation has conducted searches at various premises and recovered substantial assets and incriminating material," a senior CBI official stated. "The total value of all movable and immovable assets is yet to be ascertained."</p>
<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">The case originated from complaints lodged by Sanam Kapoor, proprietor of La Pino'z Pizza chain, who alleged that Singal had demanded Rs 45 lakh to provide favourable treatment regarding a pending income tax notice.</p>
<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">The complainant reported that the demand was accompanied by threats of severe legal action, imposition of heavy penalties, and systematic harassment should compliance not be forthcoming.</p>
<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">The accused allegedly instructed the complainant to deliver an initial instalment of Rs 25 lakh to his residence in Mohali, Punjab, on Saturday. The CBI subsequently orchestrated a trap operation, resulting in the arrest of Singal's associate, Harsh Kotak, who was caught accepting the bribe on behalf of the principal accused.</p>
<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">Singal was apprehended at his residence in Vasant Kunj, Delhi, on the same day. Both accused were presented before the designated court on Sunday, which remanded them to judicial custody for a period of 14 days.</p>
<p class="whitespace-normal break-words">The investigation has revealed the extent of the officer's allegedly corrupt practices, with authorities continuing to assess the full scope of assets accumulated through illicit means. The case represents one of the more significant corruption scandals involving senior tax officials in recent years, highlighting ongoing concerns about integrity within the revenue services.</p>
