Delhi Police&rsquo;s South East District Anti Auto Theft Squad (AATS/SED) successfully apprehended a habitual offender named Asif following an exchange of gunfire on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.
Asif, who had previously assaulted a police constable and was wanted in several criminal cases, including attempted murder and motor vehicle theft, was caught after a dramatic encounter that began with an investigation into an incident on the night of May 27, 2025.
According to Delhi Police, Head Constables Pawan and Karan were on patrol at JD Musafir Marg when they spotted two suspicious men on a motorcycle. One suspect fled, leaving the bike behind, while the other was caught by HC Karan. However, the suspect suddenly pulled out a knife and attacked HC Karan&rsquo;s wrist, allowing him to escape.
The abandoned motorcycle, bearing registration number DL3SEA2456, was identified as stolen in a separate case registered at PP Pur police station.
Following CCTV footage analysis, the suspects were identified as Raja and Asif. Raja was arrested on May 30 and confessed to committing the crime along with Asif.
On Monday, Inspector Pramod Chauhan led a planned operation that resulted in Asif&rsquo;s arrest. When signaled to stop, Asif tried to flee and fired three shots at the police. In self-defense, ASI Sharwan returned fire, injuring Asif in the right leg.
Asif was found riding another stolen motorcycle (DL3SEP9673) linked to an FIR registered at PS Lajpat Nagar. He was immediately taken to AIIMS Hospital for medical treatment.
Police revealed that Asif, 24, from Tanki Road, Jaitpur, is a habitual drug addict with a long criminal record including nine cases related to robbery, snatching, auto theft, and violations under the Arms Act. He had recently been released on bail on May 14, 2025.
A new case connected to the shootout is being registered at PS Jaitpur. Investigations are ongoing, with police suspecting Asif&rsquo;s involvement in several other crimes across the city.
